Governor Haslam: In Nashville we discuss issues that involve Tennesseans all over the state. Education is one of those topics that is on the top of everyone's mind. But sometimes Capitol Hill conversations can be too far removed from what is actually happening in the classroom. To make sure we hear from the educators on the front lines, we headed to Greene County. More than 20 educators from Greene County and Greeneville City schools joined me for breakfast in the library at Greeneville High School. This group shared their concerns, which included: the need to encourage more parental involvement, more on the job training for student teachers and help translating standardized test results for students and teachers. We plan to continue these discussions with educators in our schools all over the state. As we gather information to ensure that we are offering a high quality education for every child. An educated work force is just one of the assets that brought Austin Powder to Greene County to build a 110 million dollar U.S nitrogen plant that will create more than 80 new jobs. The plant will produce ammonium nitrate in liquid form. Austin Powder's chief financial officer, Jim Bolt, explained why Greeneville got their attention.
Bolt: The city has also gotten significant national attention. It has been rated as one of the top 50 small cities in the United States, and that's a terrific distinction. It is also in the top 12 among areas that have attracted new corporate facilities.
Governor Haslam: Construction on the U.S nitrogen plant could begin this summer, and it is expected to be open by the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013. Commissioner Bill Hagerty continued our efforts to find out how to keep new businesses coming to the volunteer state with another round table discussion, this one at the Blount County Chamber of Commerce.
Hagerty: We're going to look at, not only the market place, if you wil,l for our department, and how we're approaching the market, and how that market is evolving. But we're going to look at our internal organization, or sister organizations within state government, and also our partner organizations within the community. Many of which are represented here today. To try and figure out how we can best focus our resources and deliver the highest return on investments, so to speak.
Governor Haslam: We will take the feedback from the roundtables from Blount County, Chattanooga, and Memphis and evaluate what we need to do to keep momentum going in economic development. Future job roundtables are being planned in regions all over the state. There is still much more to come as we focus on our legislative package. Tenure reform for teachers, remove the cap on charter schools while opening enrollment up to all students, extend the Hope Scholarship to summer school and reform for our civil justice system. All of which we believe will make us more competitive and help grow jobs in Tennessee. We'll keep you updated on the direction of your state government.
